Balancing the Books...

I drive a 98 Cavalier. It gets me from A to B with reasonable fuel efficiency. When I started my adoption journey in the summer of 2006 I decided that I would get a new car as soon as my parental leave ended. Yeah...first it needs to start.

Last March I had a scare when the adoption fees were not quite paid in full, I was in the 4th month of a 6 to 9 month wait for a referral, the transmission took a nose dive, the car wouldn't go backwards...or forwards...and I was in a rural farm lane way in the dark alone with my dog. Luckily the farmers were lovely, Carol saved me, I got a tow and a second hand transmission and I went merrily on my way. I'm sure you can guess what happened to the 6 to 9 month wait.

A year later and a referral may arrive at any time and the coolant is dripping ominously from the undercarriage of my car. Persistently. Drip, drip, drip, drip... I would like this car to carry me through my parental leave.

In Ontario we are blessed with a 35 week leave with up to 55% pay (I think) up to a maximum of around $400 per week. Minus benefits paid to your employer. Can you say single, mortgage, $350 per week? This is not going to cut it, especially if I have a car payment.

Tomorrow, as you go about your business, think of my sweet green Cavalier. Think HOSE or CLAMP but don't think HEAD GASKET. If it's a head gasket I'll be in the market for a car. And that would suck.

First, it's great that you get such a long parent leave. But I hear you on the $350 per week...single...with a mortgage. I will think good thoughts for your car!

cars are a pain in the BUTT. That is all I have to say. Whatever happens you will figure it out but let's hope that your green 98 whatever gets all of the hose and clamp vibes.
